About the Artwork

'Car-rang-gel' is a bird's eye view painting using gouache where the land meets the water at Car-rang-gel, also known as North Head in Manly, NSW Australia. The artwork is based on a photo by Will Turner from Unsplash and I chose it because I love the colour, vibrancy and motion of how the water meets the rocks. Water has been a consistent theme with my artworks recently but I also the earthy orange colour of the rocks. You can read more about the Car-rang-gel (North Head, Manly) below

Background

Car-rang-gel (North Head, Manly) is the traditional / aboriginal name of the area and based on this report of the area by Harbour Trust, it is a major cultural and spiritual site of significance not only in Sydney, but across the eastern seaboard. A First Nations stakeholder in the report said its significance is similar to that of Uluru and that "it is a ceremonial site, a major Bora site, people would travel here, it was a place of food, gathering and ceremony."

Songlines are of immense cultural significance and "trace astronomy and geographical elements from ancient stories and describe how these things have helped shape the landscape as it is now. They were first used by First Nations peoples as a form of communication across the continent and a way of mapping Country." It is no wonder that Car-rang-gel is such a culturally significant place as there are "five songlines that extend out across the Country from here."
